Sustainable relationships for the future: the integration of science and humanity in the International Congress at Castel Gandolfo and Córdoba-Oct. 19, 2024 by Francesco Mazzarella
An interdisciplinary congress to promote a holistic vision of sustainability, uniting natural and social sciences through integral ecology Sponsored by the New Humanity NGO, the congress is supported by several global initiatives and is a meeting point for scholars, scientists, students and teachers from all over the world.
A holistic approach for a sustainable future
Relational sustainability, the central theme of the event, focuses on the interactions and connections between individuals, society and nature. The goal is to develop a new synthesis that integrates personal, environmental, social and economic dimensions, fostering deep and meaningful relationships that can lay the foundation for a more just and resilient world. This approach, described as “integral ecology,” reflects a vision that combines ecological, ethical and social aspects, inspired by the concept of unity elaborated by Chiara Lubich, founder of the Focolare Movement.
An unprecedented congress
For the first time in an international congress, disciplines as diverse as ecology, sociology, economics, medicine, psychology and many others come together to offer an overview and propose concrete solutions to global challenges contemporary. The congress program includes keynote speeches, workshops interactive, panel discussions and poster presentations, which encourage collaboration across disciplines and the sharing of innovative ideas. The event will explore various themes, including sustainable development, environmental ethics, sustainable urban planning, and the role of technology and education in promoting a culture of sustainability. This integrated approach is key to addressing complex issues such as climate change, natural resource depletion and social inequalities.
Relational sustainability as a response to global challenges
Relational sustainability emerges as an “emergent” property that develops
when constructive relationships are established between human beings and the environment, orienting processes toward the common good. The concept of integral ecology emphasizes the need to consider the entire human-natural ecosystem as one interconnected entity.
This requires a paradigm shift, which sees humans no longer as the dominator of nature, but as an integral part of it. During the plenary sessions, experts will discuss how the combination of the human and natural sciences can offer new perspectives and solutions. Studies and research will also be presented innovations covering topics such as the circular economy, renewable energy, and happy degrowth, all of which contribute to a more harmonious and respectful of our planet.

One of the main goals of the congress is to create a safe and open space for dialogue, where ideas can flow freely and participants can collaborate to develop concrete answers to the problems of our time. This event is also
an invitation to governments, businesses, non profit organizations and citizens around the world to join together in a meaningful and constructive dialogue. Thanks to the efforts of New Humanity and collaboration with numerous organizations, the congress aims to foster a culture of sustainability that is not only environmental, but also social and human.
The integration of these different perspectives is critical to imagining and building a future that can truly be sustainable for all.
The International Congress on Relational Sustainability represents a unique opportunity to reflect on our role in the world and our responsibilities. Through the integration of humanities and natural sciences, and through the approach of integral ecology, this event aims to build a culture that promotes social cohesion, environmental justice and long-term sustainability term. For anyone who wishes to understand and contribute to this new vision of the future, the congress offers a valuable opportunity for learning and participation.
