Signis, a Catholic Communication Association, has been carrying out interesting activities at various film festivals around the world for almost 100 years. These festivals have, in addition to official juries, other juries that are close to the values of the associations that promote them. Signis has its own or ecumenical juries at major festivals around the world.
For the Mar del Plata Festival, the only Class A festival in Latin America, Dr. Isabel Gatti, NetOne’s international coordinator, was invited to serve on the jury at the festival that was held from November 2 to 12, 2023 under the theme: “Cinema and Democracy,” as this year marks 40 uninterrupted years of democracy in Argentina.
The SIGNIS Grand Prize went to the Argentine-Korean film, A Boat Taking Me Parted from Me, directed by Cecilia Kang. Researcher Nicolás Fabiani and film critic Pablo De Vita completed the jury. The selection was made as part of the international competition, which featured outstanding and varied productions.
<img class=” wp-image-7039 alignright” src=”http://www.net-one.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/sala-300×225.jpg” alt=”” width=”379″ height=”284″ />The production of “A Boat Taking Me Departed from Me” (2023), by Cecilia Kang, was the film awarded by the SIGNIS jury, which developed the following motivation to accompany it decision: “For presenting with originality and sensitivity a current look at the challenges of intercultural dialogue and migration, along with the call against violence against women. It delves into themes such as memory and the struggle for human rights, valuing cultural diversity in the human community.”
Isabel Gatti told us, “It is an honor for me to be part of this experience. Cinema offers much to our societies so battered by countless conflicts. Its beauty, even in the denunciations of several issues, offers in various moments signs of hope. This is what Signis wants to show with these awards and at the same time to show support to our association, which includes several members of this sector.”
Kang’s film also won the official jury’s “Astor Piazzolla Special Award”; the “Audience Award”; and also the “Coco Blaustein” award for best documentary, given by the Association of Independent Documentary Filmmakers and Producers of Argentina.
