By Melissa Mejía Flórez (United World Project)

Today, the need to rethink the concept of ‘development’ is being emphasized. In many parts of the planet, discussions are taking place on this subject, linking development to human rights, mobility of people, dialogue, coexistence between different cultures, peace and protection of the planet, assessing the road travelled and the road still to be travelled towards the goals of the UN 2030 Agenda.

The traditional and ancestral contribution of the original peoples of Latin America, with their ecological philosophy and knowledge, is one of those reminders around the world to value and cherish man’s interdependence with nature.

Many books, articles, films, series, poems, blogs and podcasts explain that personal fulfilment, especially from a social and cultural perspective, is essential to human development. Therefore, knowing how to live in harmony with oneself, each other, the community and the environment is fundamental for full participation in political, economic, social, ecological and cultural life.

In a global scenario that requires common action on issues such as personal and collective identity, freedom, security, protection of the individual, environmental protection, creativity and innovation, recreation, access to essential goods and services such as water, electricity, media, health, education housing, social assistance and many others, this call was born to open an intergenerational and international dialogue on how the principles of Sumak Kawsay / Buen Vivir (‘Good Living’) and Andean philosophy can contribute to a life lived in harmony with nature and collective solidarity, for a happy, peaceful and sober life.

After two years of a pandemic that has highlighted the inequalities and unheard needs of so many communities around the world – from health and ecological emergencies, through economic and educational emergencies, to the mobility of people and the right to peace – this event, entitled Care to-gether, to-day, to-morrow, proposes a space to network and learn through the initiatives and projects underway around the world. The event, which will be held at the Mariapoli Centre in Castel Gandolfo (Rome-Italy), will be a starting point to generate collaborations and new initiatives destined to have a positive impact locally and globally. The event is promoted by the New Humanity Movement, Youth for a United World, Centre for Dialogue with the Culture of the Focolare Movement.
